The Convenience Of Clear Aligners

Choosing clear aligners (such as Invisalign) over traditional metal braces has many advantages such as not having to change your diet, or your appearance (during the alignment phase, I promise you’ll have a beautiful smile afterwards). Your routine will also require only minor adjustments.

Do’s And Dont’s

Clean your aligners every day

Throughout the day and with normal wear, your aligners will get plaque and bacteria stuck to them. That is why you should soak your aligners in cleaning solution once a day. Make sure you use only cleansers that are made specially for aligners so they don’t get damaged.

Remove your aligners before you eat, chew gum or drink anything

Although clear aligners are made with very sturdy plastic, they might get stained or even damaged if you use them while you chew your food or drink anything other than water.

Wear them for the required amount of time every day

You should wear your clear aligners for 20-22 hours a day to keep your treatment on schedule. Wearing them less than that can mean a longer treatment and may cause your teeth to shift back to a crooked position.

One of the advantages clear aligners have over traditional braces is that you can eat whatever you want (as long as you take them out before). So go ahead and chew on some gum, have a caramel sundae, enjoy a piece of hard candy, and definitely grab some nachos (extra cheese please!). Just make sure you brush your teeth after eating!

Since clear aligners are practically invisible, this means there is no reason for you to give the world a big smile!

Use harmful ingredients to clean your aligners

This means not cleaning your aligners with toothpaste or soap. Toothpaste can scratch them and soap can make the aligners change color, losing it’s invisibility (plus you probably don’t want to taste soap).

Leave your aligners out in the open

When you take your aligners out to eat or to enjoy a piece of bubblegum, make sure you don’t leave them out in the open where they can gather bacteria from the air. Remember that they also contain bacteria from your mouth that can move around and multiply if aligners are left outside of their dedicated cases.

Eat with your aligners on

Never eat with you aligners on! This can stain or damage your aligners, so always take them out before eating, and brush your teeth before putting them back on.

There you have it! If you follow these tips your realignment treatment will run smoothly and you will have a big beautiful smile in no time!
